A Parent's Guide to Choosing the Right Quran Course for Your Child

Every child's journey with the Quran is unique. Some five-year-olds eagerly sound out Arabic letters; some ten-year-olds need gentle encouragement; some teenagers arrive ready for rigorous memorisation. At IQRA Madris-Al-Qur'an, we personalise every learning path—but parents often ask us: where should we begin?

Course Pathway Overview

Stage 1: Basic Qaida (Ages 5–8, or any beginner) The Qaida is the alphabet and pronunciation foundation. Students learn to recognise Arabic letters, connect them into words, and pronounce each sound correctly from its proper articulation point. This stage typically takes three to six months with consistent practice.

Stage 2: Quran Reading with Tajweed (Ages 7+, or after Qaida completion) Students transition from the Qaida to actual Quranic text, applying Tajweed rules as they read. The goal is fluent, correct recitation of any Surah. Depending on starting ability, this stage spans six months to two years.

Stage 3: Hifz / Memorisation (Ages 8+, or after strong reading ability) Hifz requires the student to read fluently with Tajweed before beginning. Attempting memorisation while still struggling with pronunciation creates double difficulty. We honestly assess readiness and never push students into Hifz prematurely.

Stage 4: Tafseer & Islamic Studies (Ages 10+, or alongside reading courses) Understanding what you read transforms recitation from mechanical exercise into meaningful conversation with Allah. Tafseer can run parallel to reading courses once the student reaches a basic comprehension level.

Matching Temperament to Pace

  • Energetic, competitive children often thrive in Hifz with clear targets and monthly milestones.
  • Shy, careful children often blossom in one-to-one Tajweed classes where there is no peer pressure.
  • Creative, story-loving children often adore Tafseer lessons that connect Quranic narratives to their own lives.

Signs Your Child Is in the Right Course

They look forward to lessons. They practise without being reminded. They ask questions about what they read. If any of these are missing, a course adjustment—not a child problem—may be needed.
